Reset Travel: Three in Five Holidaymakers Now Take Trips Specifically to Switch Off

The annual holiday used to be for seeing things. Increasingly, it is for not seeing your phone. New Skyscanner travel trends research identifies ‘reset travel’ as a defining behaviour: three in five Australians now seek holidays that help them disconnect from constant digital noise, and one in five is actively planning to go off-grid while travelling this year.

    The Numbers Behind the Switch-Off

The data sketches a traveller who is not anti-technology but exhausted by it. Sixty-five percent of Australians say being off-grid would help them connect with nature more, and 58 percent say it would help them connect with themselves. The inclination skews young: among 18-to-24-year-olds, 71 percent say going off-grid would help them be more present in the moment — a striking verdict from the most connected generation in history.

Regions are racing to claim the trend. Tropical North Queensland is pitching itself as Australia’s reset capital, pointing to rainforest retreats and reef escapes across the Daintree and the Great Barrier Reef where low connectivity is a feature, and properties such as Silky Oaks Lodge and Daintree Ecolodge are leaning into low-signal, slow itineraries. The trend and its data are detailed in the Karryon report on reset travel.

Reset Travel’s Market Driver Is Burnout

Reset travel is best understood as a symptom. Always-on work cultures, notification saturation and the collapse of boundaries between office and home have made unstructured rest scarce enough to purchase. Where previous generations bought holidays as reward, this one buys them as recovery — closer in spirit to a health intervention than a treat.

Psychologists will recognise the mechanism: the same attention-restoration logic underlies practices like expressive writing reducing performance anxiety before exams. Brains recover through soft fascination — rustling leaves, moving water — rather than through more stimulation. The rainforest, it turns out, is an evidence-based technology.

    How the Industry Is Responding

Hotels and tour operators are productising disconnection: phone lockboxes at check-in, Wi-Fi-free zones marketed as amenities, itineraries built around dawn swims and long lunches instead of landmark quotas. The savviest are careful not to over-engineer it — a scheduled detox can feel like another obligation, and the trend’s whole point is the absence of agenda.

Destinations that can credibly offer nothing-to-do are discovering it is worth a premium. In a market where every attraction competes on novelty, the scarcest luxury of 2026 may simply be silence.

Reset travel reframes what a holiday is for. Not a gallery of sights to collect, but a deliberate interruption of the noise — after which people return, by their own reports, more present, more rested and more connected to the humans travelling with them. The out-of-office reply has become the destination.
