Exxon and Chevron Beat Profit Forecasts as Energy Earnings Shine

Energy earnings — an oil refinery at work

Energy earnings delivered the week’s most reassuring results on Friday, as ExxonMobil and Chevron both reported quarterly profits ahead of expectations. With Brent crude settled above $117 a barrel amid fears over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the two American oil majors are converting geopolitical tension into cash at a rate few other industries can match. Their results stood in sharp contrast to a technology sector busy disappointing investors on the same day.

    Production and Prices Align

Both companies highlighted robust production volumes alongside the high price environment. Exxon pointed to output strength across its portfolio, while Chevron’s results also landed before the opening bell to a positive reception. Energy was the spotlight sector of Friday’s session according to the live market coverage, even as the sector’s benchmark ETF drifted slightly lower on the day, a sign that good news was already partly priced in. Gasoline prices are up more than a third year over year, feeding directly into refining margins.

Energy Earnings Out of Step With the Market

The contrast with the rest of the market was striking. While Intel was losing more than a quarter of its value and the Nasdaq was sliding toward its worst month since March, oil majors were reporting billions in quarterly profits with the calm of utilities. That divergence is exactly what portfolio managers mean by diversification, and it echoes the economic trends investors are watching right now as money rotates toward cash-generative assets and away from growth stories that need perfect execution.

    What Shareholders Get Next

The question for both companies is what to do with the windfall. Investors will press for dividends and buybacks, while governments in producing regions watch profits climb alongside pump prices. Capital discipline has been the industry’s mantra since the pandemic, and neither Exxon nor Chevron signalled any intention to abandon it for a drilling spree, even at $117 oil. Planned spending remains focused on low-cost barrels and shareholder returns.

Energy earnings rarely stay this comfortable for long; prices above $100 have a way of destroying the demand that sustains them. For this quarter, though, the oil majors have done what the market asked: turned a volatile world into dependable profit, on a week when few other giants managed it.
